None of us want to give up our independence, and the thought of doing so is very stressful. However, the time might come when we have to leave our home and move to a place more suited to our needs. When we do, it’s essential that the new environment is stimulating and lets us participate and make new friends. Volunteers, therefore, play an important role in keeping the link to the outside world alive.
We offer a range of activities, parties and outings to the residents of the homes we visit, based on the needs and capabilities of the residents. Activities are diverse and include skittles, dominoes, bingo, crafts and knitting. Parties revolve around holidays such as Diwali and Halloween as well as raising money for Macmillan Nurses and often include entertainment and games. Outings range from trips to local garden nurseries for lunch and a bit of shopping, to an afternoon at a musical variety show. All these events are very popular and our volunteers find they give a great sense of satisfaction both to the residents and themselves.
The role of the volunteer can vary from occasionally helping out for an outing to a regular weekly or monthly slot at a specific home. We are able to provide a number of different roles and to be flexible when other events come up that make it difficult to attend. The flexibility of our roles and the sense of a team working together makes this work for us.
We are looking for caring people who will enjoy encouraging residents to take part in activities as well as spending individual time getting to know them. The most important activity, in almost all cases, is just chatting and providing companionship.
