Knitting Groups and Home Knitting

img_1086The Knitting Groups are very popular due to their social and friendly atmosphere. Meetings are held weekly, bi-weekly and monthly at a variety of times and places that should suit most Barnet residents. The knitters produce beautiful work which is of value to the community and those in need. Blankets, jumpers, tiny items for premature babies, teddies for children in this country and abroad, are just part of the Knitting Groups’ range.

Some of our residents at care homes are not able to attend the Knitting Groups and instead do knit1knitting in their homes which is collected regularly and donated along with the Group’s items. Many do simple squares which are later made into cosy blankets, providing a good project while watching TV or chatting with neighbours and comfort to those who need it.

As the volunteers suggest there is something else very positive about these activities…

“Knitting keeps me occupied and I like to feel useful. It’s good to know I am helping someone who needs it.”

“Everyone is so nice and friendly, and I feel I’ve known them for 20 years!”

“I love knitting for disadvantaged children and I think of them whilst knitting and it keeps me happy.”

Message from Ann Phillips to the knitting volunteers
2016 has been yet another great year, thank you for all the hard work and dedication you have all put in to support the different knitting groups.  This year has seen many changes, amongst them Mandy Francis has decided to stand down from running the knitting groups and handed the reins over to myself. I have volunteered, first with RSVP and now Vintage Volunteering, alongside Mandy for the past 12 years, helping with the knitting groups and I look forward to welcoming you all back in 2017!
