Reading in Schools

dgrove4smVolunteering in schools is very popular. Mostly our volunteers help with listening to children read, but are usually willing to consider anything the teacher needs help with such as mental arithmetic, helping with times tables, escorting on outings, cookery classes, arts and crafts, etc.

We have over 30 volunteers in schools across the London Borough of Barnet, Borehamwood, Potters Bar and Haringey. Skills that you take for granted (e.g. reading and numeracy) are essential to a child’s development. We introduce the volunteer to a school in their area that is looking for helpers and then it is up to the school and volunteer to arrange days and times. Most volunteers attend for a couple of hours a week.

There is so much that our volunteers have to offer, and they gain a sense of satisfaction from seeing their pupils progress over the school year.   They have said –

“I would pay the school to let me go there.”

“When I enter the classroom I feel 10 feet tall.”

“Going to the school is the high spot of my week.”
