John Worroll, a reading volunteer at Danegrove Primary School, has started a lunch-time chess club for the pupils. This has proved very popular with the children and has given rise to a team of 8 players who represented Danegrove in the first round of the Barnet Junior Chess League held at North London Collegiate in Edgware on 9 November. It was a massive tournament with 240 children from across the Borough playing simultaneously. The logistics of setting it all up must have been horrendous but it all ran very smoothly. The Danegrove team thoroughly enjoyed it and did very well to get 8 points out of a possible 16 – a very creditable performance as it was their first ever external event. John and the children learnt a lot and are very much looking forward to the next 2 parts of the same tournament, scheduled to be held in the New Year.
